A cheerful pose from an efficient combustion cycle, this portrait is a contour plot of pressure through a longitudinal slice of a 3-D Pulse Detonation Engine simulation, as the primary shock exits the tube, 1.23E-4 seconds into the simulation. From bottom to top, it features the bow shock, a zone of near isentropic compression, a Mach disk, a pair of low pressure vortices, and the expansion zone from the PDE tube.
