An aluminum oxide Ceramic Matrix Composite is mechanically tested while exposed to a flame. The flame is supplied by a high-velocity propane-oxygen spray gun, heating the specimen to 2,200°F. This allows examination of material properties in a combustion environment.

A Hall-effect Thruster operating with xenon propellant produces exhaust velocities in excess of 18 km/s! Using a combination of electromagnetism and classical physics the Hall-effect thruster ionizes the xenon gas, which acts as the propellant, and accelerates it to generate thrust. The small amount of neutral purple plasma to the right of the highly ionized blue plasma plume is from the cathode which provides electrons to both ionize the propellant inside the channel of the thruster and neutralize the exhaust plume.
